Specialized Auto Financing: The keys to Getting the Best Possible Approval

Specialized Auto Financing: The keys to Getting the Best Possible Approval

Have you experienced financial difficulties and wondered whether you can still obtain auto financing? In many situations, the answer is yes.

A bankruptcy, consumer proposal, or lower credit score does not necessarily mean that every door is closed. Every application is different, but certain financial habits may improve your chances of receiving an approval.

1. Avoid Current Late Payments

One of the first things lenders review is your current financial situation.

Even if your credit report contains difficulties from the past, meeting your financial obligations today demonstrates that your situation is moving in a positive direction. Before applying for auto financing, it is therefore best to make sure that your payments are up to date.

Payment history is one of the most important factors considered when evaluating a credit profile.

2. Demonstrate Positive Credit History

Lenders review your financial history, as well as your current situation and the recent direction of your credit profile.

Positive credit activity over the past several months may make a difference. Making payments on time on a credit card, loan, or other financial product can demonstrate that you have regained control of your finances.

When a lender sees that a customer is seriously working to rebuild their credit and that their report shows a positive trend, this may improve their chances of receiving a favourable decision. However, every lender has its own approval criteria.

3. Demonstrate Stable Employment and Income

Employment stability and regular income are also important factors in an auto financing application.

Some lenders may prefer a minimum period of employment. They may also consider a customer’s experience in the same industry when the customer has recently changed employers.

The goal is to demonstrate that you have a sufficiently stable income to make your payments while continuing to meet your other financial obligations.

4. Bankruptcy or a Consumer Proposal Does Not Necessarily Prevent Approval

A bankruptcy or consumer proposal does not automatically result in an auto financing refusal.

However, these events remain on your credit report for several years and may influence the approval decision, interest rate, and other financing terms offered.

Lenders generally want to understand the circumstances that led to the financial difficulties and the steps taken since then to rebuild. A return to financial stability, on-time payments, and responsible credit management may gradually strengthen your credit profile.

Applications That May Be More Difficult to Finance

Based on our experience, applications involving several major negative credit events may be more difficult to finance.

For example, this could include a bankruptcy followed by the voluntary surrender or repossession of a vehicle. The situation may be even more challenging when no positive credit history has been established since these events.

However, this is not an automatic rule. Every application is reviewed individually according to the customer’s situation and the lender’s criteria.

In some cases, it may be preferable to begin rebuilding your credit before submitting another auto financing application.

How Can You Rebuild Your Credit?

A credit card or another financial product may help you rebuild your credit profile, provided that it is used responsibly.

Here are a few good practices:

  • Choose a product whose payment activity is reported to Equifax or TransUnion.
  • Make all payments on time.
  • Pay at least the required minimum amount.
  • Keep your balance reasonable in relation to your available credit limit.
  • Avoid submitting several new credit applications within a short period.

Opening a new account is not enough on its own. Consistent and responsible habits over time are what contribute to improving your credit profile.

Paying an account that has been sent to collections also does not necessarily remove it from your credit report immediately. The information may continue to appear for several years.

Why Is Your Credit Score Important?

Your credit score remains an important factor when financing a vehicle. It gives lenders an indication of the risk associated with granting you new credit.

Your score may take several factors into account, including:

  • your payment history;
  • the amounts you owe;
  • your use of available credit;
  • the age of your accounts;
  • accounts sent to collections;
  • bankruptcies or other insolvency events;
  • the number of recent credit applications.

However, your credit score is not the only factor considered. Your income, employment stability, expenses, financial obligations, down payment, and choice of vehicle may also influence the lender’s decision.

The credit score you see may also differ from the one used by a lender because scoring models and evaluation criteria can vary.

What Can Negatively Affect Your Credit Score?

Several situations may negatively affect your credit report or credit score, including:

  • a late payment on a mortgage or auto loan;
  • high balances on credit cards or lines of credit;
  • accounts sent to collection agencies;
  • unpaid debts;
  • fraudulent accounts, balances, or credit applications;
  • incorrect information reported by a financial institution;
  • several credit applications submitted within a short period.

Review Your Credit Reports Regularly

One of the best ways to protect your credit is to review your Equifax and TransUnion credit reports regularly.

Some financial institutions also allow you to monitor your credit score through online banking. Checking your own credit report or score generally does not negatively affect your score.

Regular monitoring can help you identify an error, fraudulent activity, or another issue before your next vehicle purchase.

If you notice information that appears to be incorrect, contact Equifax and TransUnion, as well as the institution that reported the information, to request an investigation. Disputing an error with the credit bureaus is free.
